Velebit
is the longest of Dinara Mountains. It is slightly curved in northwest
- southeast direction between mountain pass Vratnik and Zrmanja valley,
145 kilometers long. Its gigantic body is divided into mountain passes,
which is the basis of usual division of this mountain into north (between
Vratnik and Veliki Alan), middle (between Veliki Alan and Baške
Oštarije), south (between Oštarije and Mali Alan) and southeast
(between Mali Alan and upper Zrmanja valley). It is clearly bounded
with Velebit channel on the north, and on the east with Lika –
Gac plateau on elevation ranging from 425 to 600 meters. Its width ranges
from about 30 kilometers on the north, to just 10 kilometers aerial
distance on south Velebit. Despite its gigantic looks, the mountain
elevation is not as significant; the highest peak, Vagan peak is on
elevation of 1757 meters. After being entered into world's biosphere
web in 1978. (Man and biosphere Program, UNESCO), Croatian Parliament
has declared the entire Velebit Area to be nature park, in 1981. National
park "North Velebit" (area 109 square kilometers) was founded
in 1999. in the northern part, and it has resorts Hajduk and Roan
Kukovi, special botanical resort Zavian – Balinovac –
Zavianska (Velika) Kosa, Velebit botanical garden in the north,
and special forest flora resort Štirovaca in middle Velebit. |
